Monday, May 14 - ALL LIBRARY BOOKS DUE.  Students will practice using context clues and read a nonfiction passage about blind mountain climber Erik Weihenmayer (check out his website: http://www.touchthetop.com/).  Homework:  Study for SOL Test next Thursday.

Tuesday, May 15 - Students will continue to build vocabulary skills and begin reading “The Diary of Anne Frank” by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.  Homework:  Study for SOL Test next Thursday, 3rd period students need to have read through Dec. 3rd in Tangerine.  8th Grade Reading Tutoring After School 3-4.  8th Grade Band & Jazz Band concert @ FCHS 7 p.m.

Wednesday, May 16 - Students will read Scene 2 of “The Diary of Anne Frank.”  Homework:  Study for SOL Test next Thursday; 3rd period students need to finish reading Tangerine and complete the final quiz.  8th Grade Reading Tutoring After School 3-4.

Thursday, May 17 - Students will read Scene 3 of “The Diary of Anne Frank.” 8th Grade Talent Show dress rehearsal after school.

Friday, May 18 - Students will read Scene 4 of “The Diary of Anne Frank” and review for the SOL Reading test.

Monday, May 21 - Students will read Scene 5 of “The Diary of Anne Frank” and review for the SOL Reading test.

Tuesday, May 22 - Students will review for the SOL Reading test and choose topics related to World War II to research further.

Wednesday, May 23 - Students will review for the SOL Reading test.

Tuesday, May 29 –  Mrs. Quinn’s birthday.  Students will read and respond to literature from the Holocaust and research topics related to World War II.  Homework:  Return permission slip to watch movie the last 2 days of school.

Wednesday, May 30 - Math 8 SOL Test.  Students will begin a webquest tour of the Anne Frank House and work on their research.

Thursday, May 31 - Math 8 SOL Test.  Students will complete a webquest tour of the Anne Frank House and finish their research.

Friday, June 1 - Science 8 SOL Test.  Students will share what they have learned during Unit 4. 8th Grade Social After School.

Monday, June 4 - 8th Grade Field Day & Talent Show.

Tuesday, June 5 - 1st and 2nd period students will begin viewing the film The Outsiders, 3rd period will begin watching  ”The Last Lecture.”

Wednesday, June 6 - Last Day for Students – Early Dismissal.  1st and 2nd period students will finish viewing the film The Outsiders, 3rd period will finish “The Last Lecture.”

Monday, April 30 - Figurative language extra credit due.  Students will analyze “The Raven” and participate in a shared writing activity.  Homework:  Have grade printout signed if current grade in English is a “C” or lower.

Tuesday, May 1 – Students will resume study of class novels and explain the use of idioms in writing.  Homework:  Make-up work due Friday, May 4.

Wednesday, May 2 – Students will read and discuss class novels and learn about Greek and Latin root words, prefixes, and suffixes.  Homework: 1st and 3rd period –  Student Choice Novel Project due Friday, May 11.

Thursday, May 3 – Students will analyze conflict and describe plot in class novels, learn about the authors of the novels we are reading, and continue to build vocabulary skills.  8th Grade Talent Show Auditions after school.  

Friday, May 4 – LIBRARY DAY – Last visit as a class. Students will summarize and analyze class novels.  PROGRESS REPORTS MAILED HOME.  Homework: All students –  Student Choice Novel Project due Friday, May 11.

Welcome back!  I hope that all of my students had time to refresh and reboot over our much-needed extended Spring Break.  Here’s what we’ll be doing in Room 112 in the next few weeks.

Tuesday, April 17 – Spirit Week: Mismatch and Wacky Hair Day. Students will resume class novel studies and utilize print and online dictionaries.  Homework:  Complete vocabulary cluster for a word from the novel.  Recommended online dictionary: http://www.learnersdictionary.com/

Wednesday, April 18 – Spirit Week: Neon Day.  Reading comprehension quiz on class novel.  Students will read a poem related to their class novels and learn about denotation and connotation.  Homework:  In your journal, write to explain the origin of a school-appropriate slang expression or nickname you use to a new student- include usage in context, synonyms and antonyms, and whether the word has a positive or negative connotation (at least half a page).

Thursday, April 19 - Spirit Week: Twin Day.  8th Grade Choir Concert.  Students will identify and explain idiomatic expressions and continue reading class novels.  Homework:  Complete Unit 1 & 2 Study Guide.

Friday, April 20 – School Spirit Day.  LIBRARY DAY!  Journals collected for grading.  Students will learn to apply specific vocabulary words associated with tone and mood and practice making predictions in the novels they are reading based on the authors’ use of foreshadowing.  Homework:  Read!
